Adhesive putty products — Blu-Tack, White-Tack, Fun-Tak, and similar reusable adhesives — are polymer-based materials with a waxy, oily composition. When pressed into carpet pile (by children playing, by a piece of furniture shifting, or by someone kneeling on a dropped piece), the putty conforms to the pile shape and its oily component transfers into the fibre. Coloured putty leaves pigment as well. The challenge is that room-temperature putty is pliable and spreads when pulled — cold treatment is necessary to firm it before mechanical removal.
Cold treatment first
Placing ice cubes in a bag over the putty for 10–15 minutes firms it enough to become brittle rather than stretchy. Cold putty breaks away from the pile cleanly with a plastic scraper, whereas room-temperature putty stretches and works deeper into the fibres when pulled. Avoid using aerosol refrigerant (freeze spray) directly on carpet — the propellant can damage synthetic fibres. A sealed bag of ice or a cold pack is the safer approach.

- Ice cubes in a sealed bag or cold pack
- Plastic scraper or stiff card
- Isopropyl alcohol (70%+)
- Dishwashing liquid
- Warm water
- White cloths
Removing adhesive putty from carpet
- Apply a bag of ice or a cold pack over the putty for 10–15 minutes to firm it. Do not leave the ice bag so long that it soaks the surrounding carpet.
- Once firm, use a plastic scraper or stiff card to break and lift the putty from the pile. Work from the outside edge inward. The cold putty should come away in pieces rather than stretching.
- Vacuum the broken fragments away.
- Apply isopropyl alcohol to a clean white cloth and blot the remaining oily residue. The alcohol dissolves the polymer oil that the putty leaves in the fibres.
- Follow with a small amount of dishwashing liquid worked gently into the area, then blot with warm water to rinse and blot dry.
- For coloured putty (blue, yellow, red), repeat the alcohol step until no more colour transfers to the cloth before moving to the dishwashing liquid step.
Do not pull or scrub at room temperature
Pulling Blu-Tack or similar putty from carpet pile at room temperature stretches it and works the oily component deeper into the fibres with each pull. The cold-firming step is not optional — it is the difference between clean removal in a few minutes and a spreading oily mark that is significantly harder to treat.

A large spread of putty is more work but the same approach applies. The key is to use the cold-firming method on each section and remove it in portions rather than trying to pull the whole area at once. Work on a section about 5 cm at a time — apply ice, scrape, vacuum, move to the next section. Once the bulk is removed mechanically, the alcohol treatment addresses the oily residue across the full affected area. Even heavily spread putty is recoverable with patient cold-treatment.
The Blu-Tack left a blue tint on the light-coloured carpet. Will this come out?
Blue pigment from Blu-Tack on light carpet responds well to the isopropyl alcohol blotting method. Apply alcohol to a white cloth and blot firmly — the blue dye should transfer to the cloth. Multiple passes with a fresh cloth section each time gradually removes the colour transfer. For persistent tinting on white or cream carpet, a small amount of diluted hydrogen peroxide (3% solution, tested on a hidden area first) can assist with residual blue pigment, but the alcohol step should be attempted first as it is less likely to affect the carpet dye.
White-Tack has been on the carpet for months and is now firmly embedded. Is there still a way to remove it?
Long-set putty that has hardened in place is harder to remove than fresh putty but still responds to cold treatment. Apply the ice bag for longer — 20 to 30 minutes — to firm the aged, partially dried material. A plastic scraper pressed gently into the base of the deposit (rather than pulling from above) lifts it more effectively. Some aged putty breaks away cleanly; in other cases, it has partially bonded to the fibres and leaves fragments that require multiple alcohol passes. For very old deposits, a professional cleaning service with enzymatic or solvent treatments achieves better results.
The putty was on a bright rug and has stained the carpet underneath through the rug. Is this possible?
Pigment transfer through a rug to the carpet beneath is possible if the putty was compressed under weight for an extended period and the rug fibres allowed migration of the oily component. The underlying carpet stain is typically less severe than the rug stain — treat with the alcohol blotting method. The rug itself may need professional cleaning if the pigment has penetrated deep into the rug pile.
