Furniture dents in carpet are caused by sustained compression of the carpet pile and backing under the weight of heavy furniture. The longer the furniture has been in place, the more set the dent. Fresh dents from a few weeks of furniture position can often be removed entirely; dents from furniture sitting in the same spot for years may leave some residual flattening even after treatment.
The Ice Cube Method
The ice cube method works by introducing controlled moisture to the compressed fibres. As the ice melts slowly, the water penetrates the pile and causes the fibres to swell and relax back toward their original position. The slow melt rate prevents over-wetting:
- Place one or two ice cubes directly in the dent and allow to melt completely.
- Once melted, blot up excess water with a cloth — the pile should be damp but not saturated.
- Use your fingers or a stiff nylon brush (or spoon edge) to work the pile back upright in the direction of the original pile lay.
- Allow to dry. For stubborn dents, repeat once or twice.
Steam Method
Steam is faster than the ice cube method and is particularly effective for loop-pile carpet. Hold a steam iron 5–10 cm above the dent (never contact the iron to the carpet — this will melt synthetic fibres) and apply steam for 10–15 seconds. Immediately use a stiff brush or fork to work the pile back up. Repeat if needed. Alternatively, lay a damp cloth over the dent and place the iron on the cloth briefly — the steam generated passes down into the pile.
Never iron directly on synthetic carpet
Nylon and polyester carpet fibres melt at relatively low temperatures. Always use a damp cloth barrier between the iron and the carpet, or hold the iron well above the surface and use only the steam function. Direct contact will permanently damage the pile.
For Very Old or Permanent Dents
Furniture that has compressed the same carpet area for many years may have caused permanent deformation to the pile and backing. In these cases, steam and moisture can improve the appearance considerably but full restoration may not be achievable by DIY methods. A professional carpet stretching or pile-restoration service can sometimes recover severely compressed areas. If the dent area is very small and the carpet is older, accepting the dent or covering it with furniture is also a practical outcome.

Dents from furniture sitting in place for weeks or months will slowly recover on their own over days to weeks once the furniture is removed, particularly in humidity. Dents from years of compression are unlikely to recover without intervention. Applying the ice cube or steam method immediately after moving the furniture rather than waiting produces the best results.
I used the ice cube method but the dent is still there the next day. Should I repeat it?
