Liquid plant fertilisers — used for indoor plants, garden watering, or hydroponic systems — are concentrated solutions of mineral salts, nitrogen compounds, and often organic matter (in the case of seaweed or fish-based products). When spilled on carpet, they produce a brown or yellow stain, deposit mineral salts into the fibres, and leave a strong, distinctive smell that persists long after the visible liquid has dried. Types of liquid fertiliser and their carpet effects
- Synthetic mineral fertilisers (e.g. liquid NPK solutions): produce yellow-brown staining from mineral deposits and have a sharp chemical odour.
- Seaweed and kelp fertilisers: dark brown to black staining, strong fishy or oceanic odour, organic compounds that require enzyme treatment.

Immediate treatment (fresh spill)

- Rinse thoroughly with cold water blotting — mineral salts need to be flushed out of the fibres, not just lifted from the surface.

- Allow to dry completely, then vacuum.
Rinse more than you think is necessary
Mineral salts from fertiliser can remain in carpet fibres after the visible stain appears clean. Residual salts attract moisture from the air, causing the carpet to feel damp and re-soil faster. Flush with cold water more thoroughly than a standard stain — three to four cold water blot-rinse cycles is appropriate.
Persistent odour after initial cleaning
Fertiliser odour — particularly from fish or seaweed products — can be very persistent. If odour remains after the first enzyme treatment:
- Apply a second enzyme treatment and allow a longer dwell time (20–30 minutes) before blotting.
- Apply a diluted white vinegar solution (one part vinegar to three parts water) and allow to sit for 10 minutes. Vinegar neutralises some nitrogen-based odour compounds.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the dry area, allow to sit for several hours, then vacuum. Baking soda absorbs residual odour compounds.

Brown or yellow staining after odour is resolved
Some fertiliser pigments — particularly from dark organic products — can leave a residual brown tint even after the odour is addressed.
