Nutella on Carpet: Removing Hazelnut Oil, Cocoa, and Palm Sugar Residue

13 July 20263 min read

Nutella's ingredients are sugar (the largest component by weight), palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, and milk powder. On carpet, the palm oil is the primary concern — it is a saturated fat that soaks into pile fibres, does not evaporate, and leaves a greasy residue if not emulsified with surfactant. The cocoa adds a brown colour component, and the high sugar content means dried Nutella is extremely sticky and hygroscopic (moisture-attracting), which causes it to keep collecting dirt after it dries.

Fresh Nutella Spill

  1. Scoop up as much Nutella as possible with a spoon — it is thick enough to lift cleanly.
  2. Apply cornflour or baking soda to the remaining mark, leave 5 minutes, vacuum — this draws palm oil out of the pile before liquid treatment.
  3. Apply dish soap solution (one teaspoon per two cups warm water) and blot with a white cloth.
  4. Continue blotting until no more brown colour transfers.
  5. Rinse by blotting with warm then cold water, and blot dry.

Fully remove the sugar residue

Nutella's high sugar content means any residue left in the carpet will attract insects (ants are drawn to sugar in carpet within hours in warm weather) and will cause the spot to collect dirt — creating a progressively darker patch. Multiple rinse blotting rounds after the dish soap step ensure sugar residue is fully removed. The carpet should feel clean and not slightly sticky when pressed with a dry cloth after treatment.

Dried Nutella

Dried Nutella becomes very hard and sticky as the sugar hardens and the oil oxidises. Apply warm water to the dried patch and leave for three to five minutes to soften, then gently lift the softened paste with a spoon. Do not scrape a hardened Nutella deposit before softening — the hard sugar-oil matrix can break carpet fibres if scraped dry. Once softened, proceed with the absorbent powder and dish soap steps. For Nutella that has been dried on carpet for several days, the oxidised oil may require an additional treatment round with isopropyl alcohol to fully remove the greasy film.

Frequently asked

My toddler smeared Nutella across the carpet while eating toast. The area is about 30 cm × 20 cm. Is home treatment sufficient for a large smear?

A 30 × 20 cm Nutella smear is manageable at home with the same approach as a small spill, applied over the larger area. The scoop-and-powder step first, then dish soap blotting in sections from the outer edges inward. A smear has the added challenge that the Nutella was physically spread across the pile, potentially with more pressure than a dropped spill — which pushes the oil and sugar further into the pile. Extra blotting pressure and warm water help lift the oil from deeper in the pile. If the area still feels slightly oily or tacky after the dish soap treatment, a second round with slightly more dish soap concentration addresses the remaining oil.

There are ants on the carpet where Nutella was cleaned last week. Does this mean there is still sugar in the carpet?

Ants on the cleaned spot strongly suggest sugar residue is still present in the carpet pile — ants detect sugar in concentrations far below what humans can detect by touch or smell. Re-treat the area: apply warm water and blot repeatedly with fresh cloths to remove the remaining sugar. A dish soap application followed by thorough rinsing completes the treatment. After the re-treatment, check for ants again over the following 24 hours — if they return, the sugar residue is still deeper in the pile or underlay. For deeply penetrated sugar residue, a professional extraction clean removes it from the pile depth more effectively than surface blotting.

Can I use hot water on Nutella to help dissolve the sugar?

Warm water (40°C, comfortably hot to the touch) is beneficial for Nutella because it helps both melt the palm oil and dissolve the sugar more quickly than cold water. However, avoid very hot water from the kettle or tap at maximum temperature — water above around 60°C can set the milk protein in Nutella into the carpet fibres (the same way hot water sets other proteins). Warm from the hot tap or a kettle mixed with cold water is the right temperature: effective for the sugar and oil without the risk of protein setting.
