Use warm (30–35°C) amylase enzyme solution and dwell for 60–90 minutes, keeping the area continuously moist with additional warm enzyme solution every 20 minutes. (2) Re-hydration step first — before applying enzyme, re-hydrate the dried biko mass with warm (not hot) water. Apply warm water to the hardened biko and leave for 10 minutes to begin softening the dried mass. Then gently scrape away any loosened surface material with a spoon before applying the amylase enzyme. Do not scrape before re-hydration — scraping dry hardened biko can break carpet fibres. (3) Hard caramel crust — the brown sugar and latik caramel in dried biko sets to a very hard, glassy crust on the carpet fibres. Re-hydrate with cold water (not warm — the caramel dissolves in cold water but warm water might push it deeper). Blot the dissolved caramel. Then proceed with the enzyme step. (4) Multiple enzyme application cycles — for a 3-hour dried biko, one enzyme application is unlikely to be sufficient. Apply enzyme, dwell 60 minutes, blot and rinse, then inspect. If starch residue remains (carpet still feels stiff or sticky in the stain zone), apply a second enzyme round with another 45-minute dwell.
