Electric kettle spills on carpet are most often boiling or near-boiling water — knocked over while full, tipped while pouring, or pulled off the bench by a cord. Step 1: maximum blotting immediately

Check the underlay after 24–48 hours
A large kettle spill can saturate the carpet underlay, which dries very slowly without airflow. If the carpet still feels damp after 24 hours, lift the carpet edge and check the underlay. A damp underlay that is not dried within 48–72 hours will develop mould, which produces a musty smell that persists even after the surface is dry.
Limescale and mineral residue
When a kettle tips, the mineral scale deposits from the kettle interior (calcium carbonate from hard water) can be dislodged and deposited on the carpet along with the hot water. This appears as a white or grey chalky residue on the carpet surface once dry. Do not run electric underfloor heating under a wet carpet. Most electric underfloor heating systems are not rated for operation when the flooring above is saturated — the trapped moisture can cause uneven heating, affect the heating element, and create conditions where steam is generated under the carpet. Turn the heating system off until the carpet and underlay are completely dry. Use surface airflow (fans) and room heating (not underfloor) to accelerate drying. Once the carpet and underlay are completely dry — check by lifting the carpet edge and feeling the underlay — it is safe to resume using the underfloor heating.
