Cleaning Kombucha SCOBY and Liquid from Carpet

14 July 20264 min read

Transferring a kombucha SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast) between vessels is one of the moments most likely to result in a carpet spill. The SCOBY itself is a gelatinous, rubbery disc or pancake of bacterial cellulose that can be slippery and difficult to handle, and it is almost always accompanied by starter liquid — mature kombucha with a pH of around 2.5 to 3.5. The result on carpet is a two-part problem: the gelatinous solid mass embedded in the pile, and the strongly acidic amber liquid spread around it. Both are cleanable but require slightly different handling.

Step 1: Removing the SCOBY from carpet

The SCOBY should be removed first, before addressing the liquid. Use clean hands or food-safe gloves to carefully peel the gelatinous disc from the carpet pile — work from the edges inward, peeling slowly to avoid tearing it through the carpet fibres. If you want to preserve the SCOBY for continued use, transfer it directly to a clean vessel; if it is too contaminated by carpet contact, it should be discarded. After removing the SCOBY bulk, use a blunt knife or spoon to scrape off any smaller gelatinous pieces or SCOBY strands embedded in the pile.

Step 2: Cleaning the kombucha liquid

  1. Blot up the kombucha liquid with a clean dry cloth, working from the outside of the wet area inward.
  2. Apply cold water to the affected area and blot repeatedly. Mature kombucha is acidic (pH 2.5–3.5) but at the concentrations in a typical spill it is unlikely to damage synthetic carpet fibres.
  3. Apply dish soap solution (1 teaspoon dish soap per cup of cold water) and blot. This removes the dissolved organic acids, tannins from the tea base, and any residual SCOBY material.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and blot dry.
  5. Apply enzyme cleaner to address any yeast and bacterial culture residue contributing to smell. Allow 10 minutes dwell time, then blot.
  6. Once dry, apply baking soda if any acidity-related smell remains, allow 20 minutes, then vacuum.

Kombucha colour on light carpet

Mature kombucha brewed from black tea has a medium amber-brown colour from tea tannins. On light or cream carpet, this can leave a visible tinge. After the dish soap step, apply a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide to the stained area on light carpet, allow 5 minutes, then blot and rinse. The peroxide oxidises the tea tannin colour. Do not use peroxide on dark or coloured carpet.

SCOBY hotel spill — multiple layers and large volume

A kombucha SCOBY hotel (a jar where multiple SCOBY layers accumulate in starter liquid) contains a larger volume of liquid and multiple SCOBY layers. If a SCOBY hotel is tipped over, the liquid volume can be significant. Begin by removing the SCOBY layers one at a time and setting them aside. Then address the liquid with blotting and the cold water rinse approach. For a large liquid volume, a wet-dry vacuum is more effective than hand blotting at extracting the kombucha from the carpet pile before the tannin colour has time to set.

Kombucha spill left a tannin stain on light carpet?

If tea tannin staining from kombucha has set into light carpet and home treatment has not fully removed the colour, a local specialist can apply targeted treatment.

Frequently asked

The SCOBY tore while I was removing it and small pieces are embedded in the carpet fibres. How do I get them out?

Small SCOBY pieces embedded in carpet pile are gelatinous bacterial cellulose and will not dissolve with water or dish soap — they need to be physically removed. Use a fine-toothed comb or the edge of a stiff brush to work through the carpet pile, lifting and pulling the SCOBY strands to the surface. Tweezers are useful for individual small pieces. Once the visible pieces are removed, the dish soap and cold water cleaning treats any residual bacterial culture. Do not expect chemical cleaning to dissolve embedded SCOBY pieces — mechanical removal is necessary.

My kombucha is green tea based and very pale. Does lighter kombucha stain differently than black tea kombucha?

Green tea kombucha has significantly lower tannin content than black tea kombucha, producing a pale golden or almost clear liquid. The staining risk on light carpet is considerably lower than black tea kombucha, and the colour is usually not visible on all but the whitest carpet. The acidic pH and organic content are similar regardless of tea base, so the cleaning approach (cold water, dish soap, enzyme cleaner) is the same. The hydrogen peroxide step for colour removal is generally not necessary for green tea kombucha unless the carpet is very light and a slight golden tinge is apparent.

The SCOBY and liquid contacted a wool carpet. Is the strong acid in kombucha going to damage it?

Wool carpet is surprisingly acid-tolerant — wool is a protein fibre that is naturally resistant to acidic conditions (the pH of a healthy scalp is around 4.5 to 5.5, similar to kombucha). Acid dyes used on wool carpet are also designed to bond in acidic conditions and are not affected by kombucha pH. The greater risk to wool from kombucha is the tannin staining from black tea, and the residual organic material if not cleaned promptly. Rinse with cold water and clean with dish soap as quickly as possible to limit tannin contact time. The enzyme cleaner step should be followed by a thorough cold water rinse on wool to ensure no enzyme solution remains (enzymes can affect wool protein in prolonged contact).
