Cleaning acrylic model paint from carpet
Acrylic model paint is water-soluble when wet and can be cleaned with cold water and dish soap — but the window is short. Acrylic paints begin forming a skin within a few minutes of exposure to air. Act immediately.
- Blot up any pooled wet paint with a damp cloth. Do not rub.
- Apply cold water to the stained area and blot repeatedly. The wet acrylic should lift with persistent cold water blotting.
- Apply dish soap solution (1 teaspoon dish soap per cup of cold water) and blot. The surfactant helps lift pigment particles from the fibre.
- Rinse thoroughly with cold water blotting until the water runs clear and all soap is removed.
- Allow to air-dry. If dried acrylic paint is present, re-wet with cold water and allow to soak for 10 minutes before blotting. Dried acrylic resists but does not completely resist re-hydration, and multiple wet-blot cycles progressively remove the residue.
Never use hot water or heat on acrylic model paint
Heat accelerates acrylic curing. Hot water or a heated dryer on wet acrylic paint will permanently set it into the carpet fibre. Always use cold water throughout.
Cleaning enamel model paint from carpet
Enamel model paint uses mineral spirits (white spirit or odourless mineral turpentine) as its solvent base. Water does not dissolve enamel paint — applying water first will not help and can spread the paint further. Use mineral spirits or white spirit applied sparingly to a cloth, then blot the paint from the outside of the stain inward. After the enamel paint is lifted, apply dish soap solution to remove the mineral spirit residue from the carpet (mineral spirits left in carpet fibres are a fire hazard and a strong odour source). Rinse thoroughly with cold water blotting after the dish soap step.
Lacquer model paint — proceed with caution
Lacquer model paint uses strong solvent thinners (lacquer thinner, cellulose thinner, or acetone blends). These solvents can dissolve synthetic carpet fibres (nylon, polyester, acrylic) and strip dye from any carpet type. If you have spilled lacquer paint on carpet, the safest approach is to blot up as much of the wet paint as possible with a dry cloth, allow the remainder to dry rather than applying solvent (which risks dissolving the carpet fibre), and consult a professional carpet cleaner about treatment options. Applying lacquer thinner directly to carpet is not recommended as a DIY approach.
