Step 1: Remove Fish and Accompaniment Pieces

Step 2: Rinse Fermentation Acid and Blot Fish Fat

Cold water also helps to dilute the trimethylamine (TMA), which is water-soluble. Never use hot water — heat fixes fish protein irreversibly into carpet fibres and intensifies the TMA aroma release. Apply cold water and blot twice more.
Step 3: Apply Cornflour for Fish Fat and Sour Cream
Apply cornflour, allow 15 minutes, vacuum. Trout is a relatively fatty freshwater fish (approximately 5–8% fat by weight), with fat primarily composed of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (EPA and DHA). These long-chain polyunsaturated fats are notably prone to oxidative rancidification in carpet — residual fish fat left in carpet fibres develops an intensely unpleasant rancid-fish odour within 24–72 hours. The full-fat sour cream (rømme — approximately 35% fat) adds a cream-fat load alongside the fish fat. One cornflour round addresses both fat components.
Step 4: Apply Enzyme Cleaner for Fish and Dairy Protein
Apply cold water and blot. Apply enzyme carpet cleaner and allow 20 minutes. Fish protein (protease — cold water throughout; never hot). Sour cream casein and whey proteins (protease). Red onion and chive protein (minor; protease). The fermented fish has partially self-digested from its own natural proteolytic enzymes during fermentation — some fish protein has already been broken down into smaller peptide fragments. The enzyme cleaner addresses both intact fish protein and these peptide residues. Follow with dish soap and rinse.
Step 5: Treat Fermentation Aroma — Multiple Applications Required
Allow the area to dry fully. Apply baking soda and allow overnight — then vacuum. Two to three overnight baking soda applications are recommended for rakfisk. The aroma challenge has three components: (1) Trimethylamine (TMA) — the primary amine compound responsible for the characteristic fishy smell of fermented and aged fish. TMA is a volatile, alkaline compound that adsorbs to carpet fibres. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, mildly alkaline) does not directly neutralise TMA (which is itself alkaline), but it adsorbs the volatile compound from the fibres effectively. A dilute acid rinse (one teaspoon white vinegar in 500ml cold water, applied lightly and blotted) before the baking soda step can neutralise TMA more effectively — spray lightly, blot, allow to dry, then apply baking soda overnight. (2) Fermentation sulfur compounds — dimethyl sulfide and hydrogen sulfide from the bacterial fermentation create a secondary sulfurous note. Baking soda and the subsequent ventilation address these. (3) Rancid fish fat — any residual omega-3 fat that was not fully removed by the cornflour step will oxidise and contribute a rancid aroma. The thoroughness of the cornflour step directly affects the aroma outcome.
