Cleaning Pad Thai from Carpet

Pad Thai contains rice noodles, egg, tamarind paste, fish sauce, peanuts, bean sprouts, lime juice, shallots, dried chilli, and protein such as chicken, shrimp, or tofu. The staining chemistry involves several distinct components: tamarind (a dark brown pigment from tartaric acid and tannins), fish sauce (trimethylamine — the fishy smell compound), egg protein (which sets under heat — cold water is essential), peanut oil (fat), and rice noodle starch (which can set hard when dried). On light carpet, pad thai leaves a brownish-orange stain; the fish sauce smell is the most persistent odour concern.

Cleaning steps

  1. Remove solid noodles, peanuts, and protein pieces by hand. Noodle strands left in the carpet pile continue releasing tamarind and starch during cleaning.
  2. Apply cornflour to absorb the peanut oil and any cooking oil. Allow 10 minutes and vacuum.
  3. Apply cold water and blot to dilute the tamarind and fish sauce. Cold water is important because the egg protein in pad thai will set under heat.
  4. Apply dish soap solution (1 teaspoon per cup of cold water) and blot to emulsify the peanut oil.
  5. Apply enzyme cleaner and allow 15–20 minutes dwell time for the combined egg protein, fish sauce protein, and meat or tofu protein.
  6. Rinse with cold water blotting.
  7. Apply hydrogen peroxide (3%) for the tamarind brown pigment and any dried chilli carotenoid. Allow 5–10 minutes, blot, and rinse.
  8. Apply baking soda generously overnight for the fish sauce trimethylamine smell — this is the most persistent component of the pad thai odour. Vacuum the next morning.

Cold water only — egg in pad thai sets permanently under heat

Pad Thai almost always contains egg, either scrambled into the noodles or as a fried egg on top. Egg protein in carpet sets irreversibly when hot water is applied, bonding to fibres in a way that enzyme cleaner can still address but with much longer dwell times. Use cold water throughout the initial cleaning steps. Do not use a steam mop on a fresh pad thai spill. After enzyme cleaner treatment is complete and the area has dried, a standard carpet cleaning method may be used for maintenance.

Pad Thai protein variations

  • Prawn/shrimp pad thai: adds crustacean protein with a stronger seafood smell than fish sauce alone. Extend enzyme dwell to 20 minutes. Baking soda overnight is more important for the combined prawn and fish sauce smell.
  • Chicken pad thai: adds lean chicken protein. Enzyme cleaner addresses chicken protein alongside egg protein with standard dwell time.
  • Tofu pad thai (vegetarian): adds soy protein. Enzyme cleaner is effective on soy protein. No fish sauce in strict vegetarian versions reduces the smell concern significantly.
  • Pad thai with dried shrimp (extra): adds more concentrated crustacean protein and more fishy smell. Extend enzyme dwell to 20–25 minutes and apply baking soda for two consecutive nights.
