Cleaning Pea Soup from Carpet

Fresh blended pea soup (made from fresh or frozen peas blended smooth) has a vivid, intensely bright chlorophyll green colour — one of the most saturated natural food greens in home cooking. Dried split pea soup (made from yellow or green dried split peas) is thicker, more starchy, and less colour-vivid — green split pea soup has a muted grey-green rather than bright green, while yellow split pea soup is golden and has no chlorophyll challenge at all. Split pea soups are almost always made with a ham hock, smoked bacon, or ham stock base, adding rendered fat and smoky compounds. The primary staining considerations are: green colour (chlorophyll from fresh peas or residual pigment from green split peas), pea starch (which dries to a very adhesive crust in carpet pile), and ham or bacon fat from the stock base.

Pea soup cleaning steps

  1. Scoop the bulk soup mass with a spoon immediately — pea soup starch dries to a hard, adhered crust faster than most soups. Do not let it sit.
  2. Blot the liquid across the full spread area.
  3. Apply cornflour for the ham or bacon fat in the stock base. One to two rounds depending on how fatty the soup was.
  4. Apply cold water and blot to loosen the pea starch and dilute any remaining colour.
  5. Apply dish soap solution and blot.
  6. Apply enzyme cleaner for 20 minutes — pea starch (amylase component), pea protein, ham protein (if the soup contained meat pieces).
  7. Rinse thoroughly.
  8. Apply hydrogen peroxide (3%) for colour. Fresh blended pea (bright green): one to two rounds on light carpet for the chlorophyll green. Green split pea (muted green): one round is usually sufficient. Yellow split pea: no peroxide step needed — the colour is very pale and resolves with the water and enzyme steps.
  9. For smoked ham versions: baking soda overnight if a smoky or ham odour lingers after the main treatment.

Fresh pea green vs split pea green — very different colour intensity

Fresh blended pea soup gets its vivid green from intact chlorophyll in freshly cooked peas — the chlorophyll has not had time to degrade as it would in a long-simmered split pea soup. A spill of bright green fresh pea soup on light carpet is one of the more vivid natural food colour stains and should be treated promptly before the chlorophyll oxidises and binds more strongly to carpet fibres. Dried green split pea soup, by contrast, has already undergone chlorophyll degradation during the long slow cooking of the dried peas — the green is duller and the pigment less intense, making it easier to remove. Yellow split pea soup has essentially no green pigment at all. When you assess the colour challenge: bright, vivid green (fresh peas) → two hydrogen peroxide rounds; muted grey-green (split peas) → one round; yellow (yellow split peas) → peroxide not needed.
