Step 1: Remove Fish, Goraka, and Spice Debris

Remove fish pieces with a spoon. Goraka pieces (small, dark dried fruit segments) should be collected individually — they carry an intense concentrated colour and will leave dark brown contact marks if left in place. Curry leaf stems and pandanus leaf pieces should be picked up before blotting. Mustard seeds may scatter — collect as much as possible before blotting, as pressing mustard seeds into carpet fibres releases the pungent mustard oil.

Step 2: Blot the Dark Curry Broth

Blot the dark reddish-brown curry broth from the outer edge inward. Sri Lankan fish curry broth is darker than most Indian curries due to the roasted powder — the initial blotting cloths will show a very dark brown. Apply cold water and blot again. Repeat three times. The cold-water dilution reduces the colour load significantly before the cornflour and peroxide steps.

Step 3: Apply Cornflour for Coconut Milk and Coconut Oil Fat (Two Rounds)

Sri Lankan fish curry uses both coconut milk (thick and thin extractions) and often additional coconut oil for tempering the mustard seeds and aromatics. The combined coconut fat load is high — coconut fat is primarily saturated (lauric acid) and requires two cornflour rounds. Apply cornflour generously, allow 20 minutes, and vacuum. Apply a second round and allow 20 minutes before vacuuming.

Step 4: Apply Enzyme Cleaner for Fish and Coconut Protein

Apply cold water and blot. Apply enzyme carpet cleaner and allow 20 minutes. Fish protein from the broth and fish flesh responds to protease enzyme. Coconut milk contains small quantities of protein that are also addressed in this step. Follow with dish soap solution to emulsify residual fat. Blot and rinse.

Step 5: Treat the Roasted Curry and Goraka Colour (Two Rounds)

Sri Lankan fish curry has a multi-component colour stain: turmeric curcumin (yellow, very colour-fast), chilli carotenoids (orange-red), roasted curry powder melanoidins (dark brown from the Maillard compounds in the roasted spices), and goraka tannin pigment (dark brown). All of these components respond to hydrogen peroxide oxidation. Apply hydrogen peroxide 3% over the stained area and allow 10 minutes. Blot and rinse. Allow to dry fully, then apply a second round. Two rounds are the minimum for Sri Lankan fish curry. The dark reddish-brown colour lightens progressively with each round — a residual warm beige tone after two rounds on pale carpet is normal and typically fades further over a day or two.

Step 6: Treat Fish Odour Overnight

Apply baking soda over the fully dried stain area and allow overnight. The fish odour (trimethylamine) from the curry broth and fish flesh is the primary odour concern. Sri Lankan fish curry has an intense, deeply aromatic smell from the roasted spices — the spice aroma dissipates naturally within a day or two, but the fish-protein odour benefits from the overnight baking soda treatment.
