Step 2 — Cold Water Soak

Apply cold water to the stained area and allow it to sit for three to five minutes to soften the amylopectin gel. Cold water also begins to dilute the tannin concentration. Do not use hot water — tablea tannins can bond more permanently to carpet fibres at elevated temperatures, and the amylopectin gel becomes more entangled with heat. Blot out the cold water thoroughly before proceeding.

Step 3 — Baking Soda Paste for Cocoa Butter and Milk Fat

Apply a thick baking soda paste to the full stained area. Cocoa butter fat from the tablea and milk fat from the evaporated milk are both extracted by baking soda absorption. Removing the fat layer first prevents the fat from acting as a carrier that drives the tannin chromophore deeper into the fibre. Leave for 20 to 25 minutes, then vacuum. The baking soda will typically show a brownish tint after vacuuming — this is normal and confirms fat and tannin compound extraction.

Step 4 — Enzyme Cleaner (Amylase + Protease)

Apply a broad-spectrum enzyme cleaner containing both amylase and protease. Amylase breaks the glutinous rice amylopectin chain into soluble maltose fragments — this is the critical step for reducing the sticky starch gel. Protease addresses the milk casein protein from the evaporated milk component. Dilute per label with cold water, apply to the full stained area, and allow 12 to 15 minutes dwell. After the enzyme dwell, the stain area should feel noticeably less sticky. Blot out and rinse with cold water.

Step 5 — Dish Soap for Fat Residue

Dilute one teaspoon of dish soap in 250ml of cold water and apply to the treated area. Dish soap emulsifies residual cocoa butter and milk fat. Apply gently, allow two to three minutes, blot and rinse thoroughly with cold water. This step also helps lift the sugar matrix residue from the condensed champorado base.

Step 6 — Hydrogen Peroxide for Tablea Tannins

Apply 3% hydrogen peroxide to the full stained area. Tablea tannins are darker and more condensed than Dutch cocoa tannins — plan for a longer dwell of 8 to 12 minutes for the first H2O2 pass. Blot and rinse cold. A second H2O2 application is commonly needed for champorado because the tablea tannin concentration is higher than for a typical European hot chocolate stain. Apply the second pass after the area has dried partially from the first. Test on a hidden section before applying to coloured or wool carpet.

Two H2O2 Passes Are Usually Needed for Tablea — Plan for Both

Tablea is less refined than Dutch cocoa and contains a higher proportion of condensed tannins that are more chemically stable under oxidising conditions. A single H2O2 pass typically clears 70 to 80 percent of the tannin discolouration. Allow the carpet to dry after the first pass so you can assess the remaining stain under natural light, then apply the second pass targeted to any remaining brown tint.

Step 7 — Baking Soda Dry Finish

After all liquid treatment steps, apply dry baking soda over the full treated area. Leave for 20 to 30 minutes, vacuum, then allow full ventilation drying. Once dry, check under natural light — any remaining champorado brown tint is a tablea tannin residue and can be addressed with a third targeted H2O2 application. The sweet smell of the champorado, if present after drying, indicates remaining sugar residue — apply a dilute cold water rinse and repeat the baking soda dry step.
