What Chili Con Carne Leaves on Carpet

Step 1: Scoop the Chili Off the Carpet

Scoop the chili from the carpet surface with a spoon. Work from the outer edges inward to avoid spreading the thick sauce. Blot the remaining sauce from the carpet surface with a cold-damp cloth. Do not rub — rubbing drives the tomato pigment deeper into the fibres.

The protease addresses the ground beef muscle protein; the amylase addresses kidney bean starch (beans contain a significant starch load). Blot from outside inward. Rinse with cold water. Apply dish soap solution (one teaspoon in 250ml cold water) to emulsify residual beef fat. Blot and rinse.

Step 4: Remove Tomato Lycopene Red Pigment with Hydrogen Peroxide

Tomato lycopene is a fat-soluble carotenoid pigment — the same class as beta-carotene and astaxanthin. Apply 3% hydrogen peroxide to the red-stained area and allow 10 minutes. Blot and rinse. Two rounds for a standard beef and tomato chili. Three rounds for a chili cooked with concentrated tomato paste (double or triple concentrate — the pigment load per unit volume is significantly higher than crushed tomatoes). Check the carpet surface under good lighting between rounds — the red will lighten progressively.

Step 5: Neutralise Chili and Garlic Aroma

Apply white vinegar mist (equal parts vinegar and water) over the treated area to neutralise garlic sulphur compounds and any tomato acid residue. Allow to dry. Apply baking soda overnight for the combined beef and chili aroma. Vacuum in the morning. Cumin and oregano aromatic compounds are volatile and dissipate naturally with airing — one overnight baking soda application covers both the beef aroma and the spice note.

Chili with Chocolate or Coffee

Some Texas-style or mole-influenced chili con carne recipes add dark chocolate or a shot of espresso to deepen the flavour. Dark chocolate tannins and coffee polyphenols add a mild brown stain component.
