Most food spills give you two to three minutes before penetration becomes serious. Halo-halo gives you less than sixty seconds. Step 1 — Blot Across the Full Ice-Melt Zone Immediately
Cover as much of the wet zone as possible with paper towels or clean cloths immediately — the goal is to absorb the liquid before it reaches the carpet backing. Press firmly and work from the outer edge inward. Pick up any solid pieces (beans, jelly cubes, sago pearls, leche flan pieces) by hand rather than blotting them into the carpet. The purple ube stain is typically most concentrated at the glass landing point, but the milky, syrupy spread extends much further and also needs to be blotted.
Step 2 — Cold Water Rinse Across the Full Spread Zone
Apply cold water across the entire spread zone — which is much larger than the purple-coloured area. Cold water dilutes the sugar syrup and prevents the evaporated milk from concentrating into a solid casein ring as it dries. For the ube-stained area specifically, cold water begins to dilute the anthocyanin concentration before it bonds to the fibre.
Ube Anthocyanins Are pH-Sensitive — Avoid Alkaline Cleaners Directly on the Purple Area
Purple yam anthocyanins shift from purple to blue-green in alkaline conditions (pH above 8). Baking soda is alkaline (pH approximately 8.5 in water) and will shift the ube stain hue if applied directly — this makes it harder to assess how much colour remains and whether treatment is working. Apply hydrogen peroxide to the ube area directly in step 4, before any baking soda contact. Baking soda can be used on the outer non-ube areas of the spill for the milk fat and sugar components.
Step 3 — Dish Soap and Enzyme on the Non-Ube Areas
Treat the outer milky-sweet spread zone (where the evaporated milk and sugar syrup went without the ube pigment) with diluted dish soap to emulsify the milk fat, followed by baking soda paste to absorb the milk fat on the non-ube sections. Apply protease enzyme to the full outer zone to address the casein protein from the evaporated milk. Allow 10 to 12 minutes enzyme dwell, blot and rinse cold. For any leche flan piece impact points, extend the enzyme dwell to 15 minutes.
Step 4 — Hydrogen Peroxide for the Ube Stain
Apply 3% hydrogen peroxide directly to the ube-stained area without prior baking soda treatment on that zone. Allow 8 to 10 minutes dwell. Ube anthocyanins are oxidised by H2O2 — the purple colour typically begins to fade within a few minutes of application. Blot and rinse with cold water. Assess the remaining colour — ube anthocyanins in halo-halo can be dense if the ube halaya was a thick layer, so a second H2O2 application may be needed. Apply the second pass after partial drying so you can assess the residual colour accurately.
Step 5 — Bean Starch and Agar Jelly at the Impact Point
At the original glass landing point, sweet bean pieces and agar jelly cubes may have left starch and polysaccharide deposits. Agar-agar jelly re-melts when the carpet warms after the ice melts, then re-sets as a slightly sticky film. Apply cold water followed by a dish soap pass and gentle blotting — agar is water-soluble when warm and responds well to surfactant treatment. The bean starch residue at the landing point benefits from the amylase enzyme treatment if included in the outer-zone enzyme application.
Step 6 — Baking Soda Dry Finish
Once the ube zone has been treated with H2O2 and rinsed, the anthocyanins should be oxidised and the pH concern is resolved. Apply dry baking soda across the full treated area, including the ube zone. Leave for 20 to 30 minutes, vacuum, then allow full ventilation drying. The sugar residue across the full spread zone is hygroscopic and will attract ants or insects if not fully dried and vacuumed — do not skip the baking soda step.
