Step 1: Scoop the Kheer from the Carpet

Kheer is a thick, creamy pudding — it can be scooped cleanly with a spoon if addressed promptly. Work from the outer edges inward. Collect any garnish pieces (pistachio, almond slivers). Blot the remaining liquid with a cold-damp cloth. The concentrated milk reduces very quickly to a sticky film as it cools — speed at this step prevents the caramelised milk solids from bonding firmly to carpet fibres.

Step 2: Absorb Ghee Fat with Cornflour

Apply cornflour over the kheer contact zone. Allow 20 minutes. Vacuum. The reduced concentrated milk also contains milk fat from the full-fat milk — both are addressed by the cornflour step.

Step 3: Treat Casein and Rice Starch with Enzyme Cleaner

Apply cold water and blot. Apply enzyme carpet cleaner and allow 20 minutes. Step 4: Remove Saffron Crocin Pigment with Hydrogen Peroxide

Saffron crocin is a water-soluble carotenoid glycoside — unlike most other carotenoid pigments (which are fat-soluble), crocin is somewhat water-soluble, meaning it distributes both with the milk liquid and with the ghee fat. The result is a wider crocin distribution than a purely fat-soluble pigment. Apply 3% hydrogen peroxide to the saffron-stained area and allow 10 minutes. Blot and rinse. Two to three rounds — saffron crocin is one of the most potent natural food dyes (it has been used as a textile dye for millennia) and requires thorough oxidative treatment. Apply the peroxide to the full kheer contact zone, not just the most visibly yellow areas — the dissolved crocin has spread with the milk liquid.

Step 5: Neutralise Cardamom and Dairy Aroma

Apply white vinegar mist (equal parts vinegar and water) to neutralise any alkaline milk residue and address the Maillard-browned milk compounds. Allow to dry. Apply baking soda overnight for the concentrated dairy and cardamom aroma. Vacuum. Cardamom volatile compounds (eucalyptol, limonene, and related terpenes from the green cardamom pods) are pleasant but can be detectable on carpet — one overnight baking soda application typically dissipates the spice note.
