What Lobster Bisque Leaves on Carpet

Lobster bisque is a French-style cream soup made by simmering lobster shells (and lobster meat) in a stock base with mirepoix, then finishing with heavy cream, butter, sherry or cognac, and tomato paste. The characteristic coral-orange colour comes from astaxanthin — the carotenoid pigment in lobster shells that becomes more vivid when heated (cooking changes astaxanthin from its protein-bound blue-green form in the live shell to its free pink-orange form). The fat content is very high from the heavy cream and butter. When lobster bisque spills on carpet, it deposits: heavy cream fat (dairy fat, approximately 35–40% fat — the dominant fat source), butter fat (additional saturated dairy fat from the finishing step), astaxanthin carotenoid pigment (the coral-orange colour — fat-soluble, travels with the cream and butter fat into carpet fibres), lobster meat protein and shell mineral residue, sherry or cognac alcohol (evaporates, minimal carpet concern), and tomato paste lycopene (a secondary red-orange pigment from the tomato base).

Step 1: Blot the Bisque from the Carpet

Blot the bisque with a dry cloth, working from the outside inward. Lobster bisque is a thin, liquid soup rather than a thick stew — it spreads outward across carpet fibres rapidly. Contain the perimeter with dry cloths before the central blotting. If the spill is large, use a spoon to scoop the bulk of the liquid into a bowl first.

Step 2: Absorb Cream and Butter Fat with Cornflour

Apply cornflour over the full spill zone (extend to the outer edge where the soup spread). Allow 20 minutes. Vacuum. Three rounds — the combined fat load from heavy cream (35–40% fat) and finishing butter is very high. The cornflour will turn cream-to-orange as it absorbs both the dairy fat and the fat-soluble astaxanthin pigment — this is expected and confirms the cornflour is working. Extend the spill perimeter by 3–4cm when applying cornflour, as the thin bisque liquid has spread further than the visible orange stain.

Step 3: Treat Lobster and Dairy Protein with Enzyme Cleaner

Apply cold water and blot. Apply enzyme carpet cleaner and allow 20 minutes. The protease addresses lobster meat protein and casein from the heavy cream. Blot from outside inward. Rinse with cold water. Apply dish soap solution (one teaspoon in 250ml cold water) to emulsify residual cream and butter fat. Blot and rinse. The butter fat in lobster bisque is a saturated, relatively waxy fat — the dish soap emulsification step is important for full fat removal.

Step 4: Remove Astaxanthin and Tomato Lycopene with Hydrogen Peroxide

Apply 3% hydrogen peroxide to the stained area and allow 10 minutes. Blot and rinse. Two to three rounds for the astaxanthin (the dominant pigment from the lobster shell colouring the cream base) plus tomato lycopene from the tomato paste used in the bisque base. The astaxanthin in lobster bisque has been heat-released from its shell protein binding and is now free — it is more mobile and more deeply distributed in the soup than astaxanthin in a raw prawn, and therefore benefits from the full three peroxide rounds.

Step 5: Neutralise Shellfish and Cream Aroma

Apply white vinegar mist (equal parts vinegar and water) for the shellfish amine compounds and sherry/cognac acid residue. Allow to dry. Apply baking soda overnight for the combined cream and lobster aroma. Vacuum in the morning. Lobster bisque has a distinctive, persistent richness from both the cream and the shellfish compounds — a second overnight baking soda application may be needed if the aroma is still detectable.
