  1. Apply enzyme cleaner generously to fully saturate the area — use enough that the enzyme penetrates to the backing depth where the milk reached.
  2. Cover loosely with plastic film to prevent rapid evaporation and allow 2–4 hours dwell time.
  3. Blot up the cleaner and allow to dry completely.
  4. Sprinkle baking soda over the dried area, leave overnight, then vacuum — this absorbs residual volatile fatty acids.
  5. If odour persists after two enzyme treatment cycles, the milk has likely penetrated through to the underlay. Professional hot water extraction with pre-treatment gives the best chance of complete removal at this point.

Full-Fat vs Reduced-Fat Milk

Full-fat milk contains significantly more fat than skim or reduced-fat milk. Higher fat content means a heavier dish-soap degreasing stage is needed and the oily residue is more likely to attract soil if not fully removed. The protein content and odour risk are similar across all milk types. Cream, half-and-half, and cream-based sauces have the same treatment approach but require more thorough degreasing.
