Nappy rash cream — Sudocrem, Desitin, zinc and castor oil cream, and similar products — is a dense paste of zinc oxide in a lanolin or petroleum jelly base. When it contacts carpet it creates a highly visible white smear that worsens dramatically if rubbed or wetted immediately. The treatment requires three distinct stages: physical removal, oil-base degreasing, and residual white cast treatment.
Step 1: Physical Removal — Do Not Rub
- Use a blunt knife, spoon, or credit card to lift the cream off the carpet surface. Work from the outside edge of the deposit inward using short upward strokes.
- Do not press down — this embeds the paste into the pile. The goal is to scoop upward.
- Remove as much cream as possible this way before applying anything. The more you can lift physically, the less degreasing is needed.
- For a large blob, chill it with an ice pack for a few minutes first — cold paste is less tacky and comes off more cleanly.
Step 2: Degrease the Lanolin or Petroleum Base
After physical removal, a greasy or waxy film remains from the cream's carrier base — lanolin, petroleum jelly, or mineral oil depending on the product. This needs a degreasing step before water-based cleaning.
- Apply a small amount of dishwashing liquid directly to the residue and work it gently into the fibres with a damp cloth using dabbing motions.
- Let it dwell for 3–5 minutes to penetrate the waxy base.
- Blot with a clean dry cloth, working from outside in. Repeat until the greasy feel is gone.
- Rinse with cold water and blot dry before moving to the next step.
Rubbing alcohol for petroleum jelly base
Products with a petroleum jelly (Vaseline-like) base — such as some Sudocrem variants — respond better to rubbing alcohol than to dish soap alone. Dab IPA onto the residue after physical removal, blot, then follow with dish soap to remove the oily alcohol residue.
Step 3: Treat the Residual White Cast
Even after degreasing, fine zinc oxide particles remain embedded between carpet fibres, giving the area a chalky white cast. This is the same mechanism as mineral sunscreen on carpet.
- Mix 1 tablespoon of white vinegar with 1 cup of cold water. The mild acid helps disperse zinc oxide particles from the fibre surface.
- Apply to the white-cast area and blot firmly with a clean cloth.
- Allow the carpet to dry completely — the white cast typically fades significantly as moisture evaporates.
- Vacuum the area once fully dry to remove any remaining loose particles from the pile surface.
What Not to Do
- Do not add water before physical removal — wetting zinc paste makes it spread immediately into a much wider white smear.
- Do not scrub — zinc paste in carpet fibres spreads laterally under friction, turning a spot into a patch.
- Do not use bleach — it reacts with zinc compounds and may cause discolouration rather than removing the stain.
