What Makes Orange Juice Stain Carpet

Orange juice contains three staining components. Beta-carotene and other carotenoid pigments give the orange colour — these are fat-soluble compounds, which means standard water-based cleaning does not dissolve them as effectively as pigments with water-soluble dyes. Citric acid (the dominant acid in citrus) lowers the local pH of the carpet, which can affect the dye stability of some carpet types and complicate treatment. And the high sugar content of juice, if left to dry, creates a sticky residue that attracts and holds airborne particles.

A common experience after cleaning an orange juice spill is that the bright orange colour clears easily, but a faint yellowish or cream tint remains weeks later. This is residual carotenoid pigment that has partially bonded to the fibre — not removed by water-based treatment alone.

Immediate Treatment

  1. Blot up as much juice as possible immediately. Do not rub — blot with firm downward pressure using a clean white cloth. Work from the outside edge of the spill inward.
  2. Apply cold water to a fresh cloth and blot repeatedly. Cold water dilutes the sugar and some of the acid. Continue until the cloth shows no further orange colour pickup.
  3. Mix a small amount of dish soap in cold water (one teaspoon per 500 mL). Apply to a cloth and blot the area. Dish soap helps emulsify the fat-soluble beta-carotene component and suspends it for removal more effectively than water alone.
  4. Rinse by blotting with plain cold water several times — thorough rinsing is essential to remove sugar residue. Left-over sugar makes the area sticky and prone to rapid re-soiling.
  5. For any remaining yellow tint, apply 3% hydrogen peroxide (pharmacy grade) to a cloth and blot the area. H₂O₂ oxidises carotenoid pigments. Test in a hidden area first — it can lighten some carpet dyes.

The citric acid actually helps slightly

Orange juice's acidity (pH 3.5–4) creates mildly acidic conditions that can help prevent tannin compounds from bonding to fibres — unlike alkaline conditions that encourage tannin binding. However, the acid also interacts with some carpet dye systems. If you have wool carpet with plant-based dyes, treat orange juice promptly and test any peroxide or alkaline cleaner in a hidden area.

Preventing Re-Soiling from Sugar Residue

Orange juice contains 8–10 g of sugar per 100 mL — significantly more than most other common spilled drinks. If sugar is not fully removed, it crystallises in the fibre as the carpet dries, creating a textured, hygroscopic residue that continuously attracts and holds dust and foot-traffic particles. The treated area will darken faster than surrounding carpet within days.

After the main treatment steps, do a final rinse pass: apply clean cold water to a cloth and blot the area firmly at least three times, changing to a fresh section of cloth each time. This extended rinse step is the most important factor in preventing re-soiling.
