A pressure washer is effective for cleaning outdoor carpet — it removes embedded grit and organic growth efficiently. Use a wide fan nozzle at medium pressure. High-pressure close-range washing can fray the fibre surface of cheaper outdoor carpet and degrade the backing over time. Keep the nozzle at least 30cm from the surface and work in the direction of the pile. Allow the carpet to dry completely before foot traffic returns — a wet outdoor carpet on a polished concrete or tiled surface is a slip hazard.
Outdoor carpet and indoor carpet cleaning methods are different
Do not use steam cleaning or hot-water extraction on outdoor carpet in situ on a balcony — the equipment is not designed for outdoor use and the excessive moisture in an unventilated corner can create pooling under the carpet. Outdoor carpet is better managed with hosing, scrubbing, and pressure washing.
When to Replace Rather Than Clean
Outdoor carpet has a shorter lifespan than indoor carpet — typically five to eight years in a Sydney coastal environment, shorter if it is heavily sun-exposed. When the fibre is visibly bleached or degraded, the backing is cracking, or the carpet has developed persistent mould that returns within weeks of cleaning, replacement is more practical than continued cleaning.
