Pet Urine and Odour Removal from Carpet: What Actually Works

Pet urine is the most challenging carpet contamination most households face — not because the stain itself is hard to lift, but because the odour source is different from the visible mark. Understanding the chemistry explains why some treatments work and others simply delay the problem.

Why Pet Urine Keeps Smelling After Cleaning

Enzymatic cleaners contain biological enzymes (protease, urease, lipase) that break down the organic molecules in urine into odourless by-products — carbon dioxide and water. Unlike fragrance-based products that mask the smell, enzymatic treatment removes the chemical source. Unlike bleach or strong disinfectants, enzymes work without damaging most carpet fibres.

The key to effective enzymatic treatment is dwell time and saturation. The cleaner must penetrate as deep as the original deposit — which on a standard pile carpet that has been wet, often means the backing and underlay have absorbed urine as well. Applying enzymatic cleaner only to the surface pile will not reach the source.

  1. Blot (do not rub) as much fresh urine as possible with paper towels, pressing firmly to draw liquid up from the backing.
  2. Saturate the entire marked area with enzymatic cleaner — apply enough that it reaches the backing. The product should be slightly wet to the touch after 10–15 minutes.
  3. Cover loosely with plastic film or a damp cloth to prevent the enzymes from drying out before they finish working. Enzymes need moisture to function.
  4. Allow a dwell time of at least 20–30 minutes for fresh stains; for old dried deposits, a dwell time of several hours or overnight (keeping the area moist) gives better results.
  5. Blot dry, then allow to air dry completely before assessing. Do not steam clean immediately after — heat can set any residual protein and prematurely kill enzymes still working.
  6. Re-test with UV torch once fully dry to confirm the deposit has been eliminated.

  • Old dried deposits (months or years) where uric acid crystals have formed — these require commercial-strength enzymatic pre-soak followed by high-pressure hot-water extraction to flush the backing.
  • Deposits that have penetrated through the carpet backing into underlay — at that point the underlay itself is the source, and surface treatment cannot reach it. In severe cases underlay replacement may be required.
  • Multiple overlapping deposits in a confined area from long-term pet access — the cumulative load exceeds what DIY saturation can address.
  • Wool or delicate natural fibre carpet — the wrong pH or extended wet dwell can permanently damage natural fibres; professional treatment is safer.

Underlay contamination: the hidden problem

If the smell returns within days of cleaning, the underlay is almost certainly contaminated. No surface treatment will eliminate underlay odour — professional extraction with sufficient water volume to flush through the backing, or underlay replacement, is the only path forward. A specialist can assess this during an inspection.
