The Subfloor Must Also Be Assessed

On a timber subfloor, this causes discolouration and odour retention in the timber itself — a stain-blocking primer or sealer must be applied to the subfloor before new underlay is installed, otherwise the smell can still penetrate upward through the new underlay and carpet. On concrete, a sealer is also advisable. This step is critical and often skipped by homeowners who replace only the underlay.
