Step 1 — The first 5 minutes (fresh stain)
Speed is the only real advantage you have with red wine. The wine is still liquid, still above the fibre surface, and hasn't yet bonded with the dye sites in the carpet.
- Grab a clean white cloth or white paper towels. Blot from the outside of the stain inward — this prevents spreading.
- Pour a small amount of cold (not warm, not hot) water over the stain. Hot water opens carpet fibres and can set protein-based stains; cold water keeps fibres contracted.
- Blot again, working outside to centre. Replace the cloth as it picks up colour.
- Repeat until no more wine is transferring to the cloth.
Why "blot, don't rub" matters
